Home Ownership Is Still Key To The American Dream
A recent survey found that homeownership remains a crucial aspect of the American Dream. The survey, which polled over 1,000 adults, revealed that 75% of respondents believe that owning a home is an essential part of achieving the American Dream. Although the exact date of this survey is unknown, a similar survey conducted by Hearth in 2017 found similar results, with all generations agreeing that homeownership is very important to achieving the American dream.
Why Homeownership Matters
The surveys also explored the reasons why homeownership is so highly valued. The top reasons included:
- Building wealth and financial security (53%)
- Having a sense of community and belonging (43%)
- Enjoying greater freedom and autonomy (42%)
- Providing a stable environment for family and children (41%)
Demographic Insights
The surveys also revealed some interesting demographic trends:
- Millennials (1981–1996): 83% believe homeownership is essential.
- Generation X (1961–1980): 75% share this view.
- Baby Boomers (1946–1960): 68% agree homeownership is key.
- Generation Z (1997–2012): A NAR survey found that 72% want to own a home within 10 years.
Survey Methodology
The Realtor.com® poll was conducted on November 7–8, 2024, among a national sample of 2,201 adults aged 18+. The survey was conducted online, and the data was weighted to match U.S. adults based on gender, education, age, race, and region.
